Statesville Rotary Triathlon

Justin and CarrieAwake @ 4:30am (because my wife likes to get to races ridiculously early), I walked into the kitchen to make coffee (important!) and my standard pre-race breakfast. After loading up the car and driving about an hour, we arrived at the race site at the Statesville Y. A relaxed environment, the Trysports series at Setup Events is great for people of all ability levels…I saw some friends, socialized for a while and then warmed up on the bike and run. 20min before the race start, I go into the crowded pool to get loose in the water. Carrie is already there, and we get ready for the start.  I start 5th and she starts 10 seconds later in 6th. We get underway and my only goal for the swim in not to get passed by my wife! Goal accomplished!! (She did tap my feet during the last lap – just to show me who’s boss).  I blaze through T1 and start hunting people in front of me.  By mile 4 I was all alone, 30m behind the motorcycle…This is a tough little bike course with no flat sections and lots of turns (one of which I over-cooked and took the turn on my front wheel!). Coming back into T2 I dodge a couple of cars and get out on the run as fast as possible, knowing that there were some good runners in the field behind me…

The run goes out and passes part of the last half-mile of the bike – and I see Carrie – RIDING STRONG!!! She had only been passed by like, 2 maybe 3 GUYS! I think to myself, this would be really cool if we won together!!! Then I realize that I need to quit daydreaming and get moving! The run course was flatter than the bike, but with lots of turns. As I came to the finish, I had a little bit left and tried to sprint it in…hoping I had done enough. In pool swim formats it is hard to tell where your competition is. Crossing the line, I thought I stood a good chance to win it but learned that a buddy of mine who races in the open/elite category had shown up late and registered that morning.

Carrie came across the line and learned the exact same news about another female that had registered late. When the dust finally settled – Carrie had blown away the women’s field by over 2 minutes – and I got “a whole-lotta-lucky” and squeaked by with a 6 second win. Interviewed by the paper, high-fiving our buddies as they cross the line, we were hamming it up and having a great day! It is awesome to win a race (this was my first “W”), but to do something like that as a couple – no matter how big or small the race – is a special experience that we will never forget…
